Are you like so many of us dreaming of a sunny family vacation? Lined with miles of beach and palm trees, the Sunshine State is your answer. A family vacation to Florida has something for everyone. A lot of articles will start out exactly like that, “something for everyone,” but, we’re confident about it. Florida is a state of relaxation AND fun. Whether you’re staying on the coast or inland, you’re still only a day trip from the beach. We’ve chosen a few of our favorite ideas for planning a family vacation to Florida and listed them below.
Best Theme Park Family Vacations to Florida
We’re starting out with a classic, Orlando, FL. It’s home to many of the iconic FL theme parks including Walt Disney World, Universal, and Sea World. It’s also home to some of the lesser-known like Fun Spot and Gatorland. Transportation is convenient with the airport less than 30 minutes away from most of the parks. Plenty of adventurous visitors are able to tackle more than one park in a single vacation. It’s a great destination for traveling with young kids. Our team has lots of advice (and deals) for booking a Disney vacation.
Tampa, FL, is another city known for its long-standing parks like Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, and the Lowry Park Zoo. The adrenaline-pumping rides make this a great choice for those with older children. Less than 30 minutes is St. Petersburg, a city with gorgeous beaches lining the coast. We meant it when we said there’s something for everyone in a family vacation to Florida!
Winter Haven, FL
A more unconventional choice is in a central city named Winter Haven, FL. It’s infamous for Legoland, Bok Tower Gardens, and water skiing. Legoland has lots of rides, interactive shows, shopping, and a water park perfect for cooling off in the summertime. The Legoland Resort itself is an attraction. Each room is decorated to appear as if it’s built of Legos. This is a great choice for young ones or Lego lovers!
Fun fact: When planning the city and surrounding areas, the blueprints of Winter Haven and nearby city Lakeland accidentally got switched. Winter Haven has over 50 lakes within or bordering it!
Best Beach Family Vacations to Florida
The Florida Keys offer families a ton of tropical activities like boating, diving, fishing, snorkeling, and more. From Key Largo to Key West, it spans 113 miles of coast. Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West are the most common and convenient for families. Key Largo is great for the adventurous family looking for scuba diving and water sports. Marathon has beautiful white sand beaches and affordable places to stay. Key West is the most popular and the most active with beach resorts, water sports, seafood restaurants, and nightlife.
St. Augustine, FL
As the oldest city in Florida, St. Augustine has tons of fun history for a family to enjoy. Plenty of attractions combine education and fun such as the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, the Colonial Quarter, and the Pirate Museum. Its Atlantic-facing beaches are lined with quaint ice cream shops, seafood restaurants, and shopping. For the brave, it’s also known for guided tours of 19th-century ghosts. It’s an affordable family vacation to Florida for all ages.
With year-round sunshine, Florida is a great choice for a family trip no matter the occasion. Whether you’re looking for a theme park or beach vacation, you’re never far from the other.
